white men who think theyre the shit

i am so sick and tired of white men thinking they have a right to my fucking time. here is the difference in approach, 9 times out of 10:

black guys approach me and try to strike up a conversation that shows something about themselves; if we get to chatting then they ask if i talk to black guys, and when i say yes then they ask if they can take me out. if i seem disinterested at any point, they almost always back off without me having to actually ask them to leave me be.

latinos approach me by being funny and cracking jokes about being latin@ in the shitty area where i now live. if i dont seem into it then they might suck their teeth at me or something but they also back off.

but white guys? they think they can come to me with NO GAME WHATSOEVER, just by virtue of being a white dude they can just stroll up to me like “ew you’re drinking whiskey?” or something stupid like that. they try to flip it like i should impress them. if i don’t seem into it then they KEEP GOING. if i ignore them or walk away then they sometimes follow. it is WHITE MEN who call me a bitch or a cunt or a slut when i am not interested in them. i have been followed in cars by packs of white men. i have had white men not give up and stalk me around bars and clubs or try to take me down a notch. and it’s because they think that they have a fucking right to my body. and maybe they dont get it, but it is fucking terrifying to me because historically, as a mexican woman, white men would have had access to my body. so i can’t just say “oh he is persistent” or whatever. i have to be aware of this larger context that they are exploiting without a second thought.

Why you talk so white!

Who Defines Black Women ›

‘When I reflect on Black women and images, the first thing that enters my mind is the portrayal of them through media images as self-hating, angry, miserable, and vindictive. All of those characterizations are fictitious and derive from Western America’s foundation of White supremacy, as the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan has so clearly demonstrated and proven.’

In case you want to read a whole article about people being wrong here it is:

We’ll be going over it more in-depth in the future but I had to get the obvious answer of the way.

White Privilege - Peggy McIntosh

This is something EVERY American White person needs to read.

It was written by a White lady. It details things that white people don’t have to worry about in day-to-day interactions that a lot of minorities do have to deal with in day-to-day interactions.

If you haven’t read this before, please do! Especially if you’re new to the concept of “white privilege.”

I made it all the way to undergrad before I read this for the first time, and I nearly cried with relief.  If you haven’t read this before, please read it now.

This is so typical it does not even surprise me anymore.  Whenever POCs get together and talk about race, someone usually white has to appear and ask us why are you obsessed with race.  Well, I don’t know.  Maybe it’s due to a detail history of colonialism, slavery, institutionalized power imbalances that keep white people as the statu quo, and that sort of sucks for Black people, Asians, Hispanics/Latin@s, First Nation/Native/Aboriginal persons.  I mean, if you are white, you have a privilege to ignore these conversations, so how about you exercise that right by unfollowing instead of trying to make a POC feel guilty over what she talks about on her blog?  It is really that simple.

“Our society thinks that success means having a car and a lot of money and looking as white as you can or as American as you can. Or if you’re white, looking as exotic as you can. We don’t have any idea that it’s about our hearts and our souls and how we treat the next person.”

Teachers are often among that group most reluctant to acknowledge the extent to which white-supremacist thinking informs every aspect of our culture including the way we learn, the content of what we learn, and the manner in which we are taught. Much of the consciousness-raising around the issue of white supremacy and racism has focused attention on teaching what racism is and how it manifests itself in the daily workings of our lives. In anti-racist workshops and seminars, much of the denial that leads many unenlightened white people, as well as people of color, to pretend that racist and white-supremacist thought and action are no longer pervasive in our culture.

Yellow Rage - Listen Asshole.

This piece is so fucking fierce.  It’s a must-listen for anyone, especially for people who want to appropriate poc’s culture.   I’m so grateful that I went to the type of undergrad where we played this video (among others) and sat there discussing it for several classes - we need to start prioritizing dialogue in classrooms instead of giving kids reading material and grading their responses.

Life can be bright in America.
If you can fight in America.
Life is all right in America.
If you’re all white in America.
